Event description

Description

This short course will provide basic understanding of how the renewables such as wind and PVs, electric vehicles, and battery storage systems are connected with the grid. It will familiarize the participants with the basic power systems terms and terminologies for regulatory and policy issues dealing with the grid interface of such systems.

The intent is to present this in such a way that it can be understood without previous high school physics course.

Some of the topics that will be covered are as follows:

  1. Very basic ideas, terminologies, and apparatus in electric power: dc, ac, power, energy, real power versus reactive power (VAR), power factor, single-phase, three-phase, transformers, and generators, etc.
  2. Power Electronic Converters:
    • Why are they needed, how do they work, their efficiency, cost, and reliability, space required?
    • How are they controlled and can they offer additional functionalities that are above and beyond the traditional generation?

This short course will serve as a refresher to engineers working in this field and is meant to familiarize anyone with a non-engineering background working in this space such as utility CEOs/CFOs/COOs, legal counselors and advocates going through the permitting process, utility commissioners and regulators, energy policy makers, power plant developers, electricity market designers, etc.

This course can be attended in person or through the internet. Recording will be available to those who registered.

This short course is sponsored by the University of Minnesota Center for Electric Energy [UMCEE].

This course will provide 4 Professional Development Hours (PDHs)
