"What the Children Have Taught Us: Understanding Grief and Loss in Childhood and Adolescence"

Sponsored by The Children Task Force of Washington County, Pennsylvania and provided by Patrick McKelvey of the Caring Foundation.

This training is provided for free to all service providers, families and community members, who would like to participate.

Topics discussed will include:

  • Loss of a loved one by natural causes, suicide, homicide or overdose
  • Non-death loss(processing grief and loss for a child who has had multiple placements or parental separation)
  • How grief can look in different stages and repeat grief
  • Resources available to providers, children and families

About the Presenter:

Patrick McKelvey earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL and master’s degree in Counseling Psychology at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA. Patrick is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Counselor. Patrick is currently the Outreach and Education Coordinator and a Child Grief Specialist at the Highmark Caring Place in Pittsburgh, PA, where he oversees peer support groups for grieving children and their families. Additionally, in his role as Outreach and Education Coordinator, Patrick works to heighten awareness of children’s grief through consultations, presentations, and trainings for professional and community groups. Prior to joining the Caring Place team, Patrick served as a Clinical Program Manager overseeing pediatric and early childhood behavioral health programs in Western Pennsylvania, specializing in evidenced-based trauma treatments for children and families in various community and school-based settings. Patrick is a rostered Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) therapist; and has a passion for developing innovative approaches to working within an interdisciplinary approach with other child-serving systems to advocate for strengthening child-centric and trauma-informed approaches to child and family supports.
