  • What are the employer’s responsibilities?
  • Learn how to avoid FMLA liabilities.
  • Understand when and how to apply the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Learn how to coordinate FMLA with NY State Disability, workers compensation and the NY Paid Family leave Act.

Presenters:

David Mahoney, Employment Law Attorney, SilvermanAcampora, LLP

David regularly represents local businesses,victims of fraud, and court-appointed fiduciaries in a wide range of federal court matters. David began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Trial Division of the New York County District Attorney’s Office, serving the Honorable Robert M. Morgenthau, where he distinguished himself in prosecuting both misdemeanors and felonies in the areas of street crime, fraud, and domestic violence.  David has utilized his experience as prosecutor in representing bankruptcy trustees and court-appointed receiver in litigation arising from fraud-induced insolvency proceedings. In that capacity, David has worked extensively with federal authorities and engaged in long term investigations of Ponzi schemes, director and officer malfeasance in publicly traded companies and mortgage fraud rings. David also represents the victims of fraud in their individual capacity, whether as creditors seeking to recoup their losses, or as targets of “claw back” litigation.

Barbara DeMatteo, Director, HR Consulting, Portnoy, Messinger, Pearl & Associates, Inc.

Barbara DeMatteo is an accomplished professional whose Human Resources experience spans over 35 years. In supporting businesses in varied industries across the United States, Barbara continually develops her knowledge of federal and state employment regulations, strengths in employee relations, interviewing, training as well as coaching supervisors and managers. Barbara acts in the capacity of a company's outsourced HR function in providing guidance on the most effective way to handle employee situations and limit liability.  Writing and revising employee handbooks, developing meaningful and targeted job descriptions, developing and implementing performance management programs, and nurturing HR professionals through on site mentoring are her strengths.  This comprehensive experience adds credibility to the training programs she develops and delivers to supervisors and managers and allows her to connect with trainees in a realistic and impactful way. Her mission is to develop ‘Managers of Process’ into more valuable ‘Managers of People’.
