Understanding & Fitting Sewing Patterns, 2 Sessions:
Wednesdays, Dec. 7th & 14
10am-12noon.

Appropriate for beginner sewists. $45 per person.

Come learn the beginning steps in garment making. In this class you will learn how to read a pattern, take your body measurements, and you will learn some basic ideas on how to fit patterns to your body as well. You will also get a quick guide to fabric choices, level of difficulty, pattern transfers and how pattern pieces fit together. This is a mostly demo class that will leave you confident in beginning garment making. 

Session 1 – Understanding Sewing Patterns
Overview of garment styles (choosing a pattern/different levels of sewing)
What do all those marks mean? Decoding markings; reading a pattern; understanding fabric/notion requirements, terminology, etc.   
Taking basic body measurements

Session 2* –Transferring & Fitting Your Pattern
Taking more in-depth body measurements
Methods of copying/transferring a pattern versus straight cut
Basic alterations to make before cutting your fabric

verview on how pieces fit together (instructor will give demonstration)
Choosing a garment pattern
*Materials List for Session 2:
1. Simple (or Beginner) pattern
2. Measuring tape
3. 18” clear sewing ruler (or equivalent)
4. Fabric or muslin (amount required by your pattern)
5. Straight pins (or quilting pins)

You will sew your project outside of class, either at home or at Uptown Needle & CraftWorks (if you do not have a machine yet).

Shannon Faulstick started sewing when she was 7 years old. As a self taught seamstress she has worked in different fields in sewing from alterations, quilting, garment construction and teaching. Currently she is working on a line of children's apparel knitting and sewing patterns.

As with all our classes, you may register online through Eventbrite, or in person in our shop. If you prefer to pay the class fee on the day of class, you must call the shop to reserve your space 504-302-9434. Please read our class policies here.  We set minimums on most of our classes. If for some reason a class does not “make”, you will be notified and will receive a full refund.
