Description

Marjaree Mason Center presents Understanding Domestic Violence And Its Impact On The Church with special guest speaker Julie Owens

Domestic violence is happening all around us. It occurs in all communities, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or socio-economic status. The physical, mental and spiritual effects of domestic violence can be devastating to families and communities. Do you feel equipped to spot the signs and act to help someone in your church or community?

Julie Owens, a pastor’s daughter and a survivor of domestic violence, will lead us through an interactive lecture where we will look at the history of domestic violence and learn who is involved, who is affected, and who is vulnerable. Julie will use biblical references to help shape the discussion of ways for the church to educate members, support victims and hold accountable those who are inflicting the harm on their partner. By the end of the course, participants will have access to resources for responding to domestic violence as individuals, pastors and churches. It is our hope that individual religious leaders, as well as their entire faith community, will leave the workshop feeling empowered to work together to support victims of abuse in their churches and congregations.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Educate lay leaders, clergy, and interested persons of faith about how the dynamics of domestic violence play out in couples within their churches.
  • Equip attendees with the knowledge to better understand domestic violence and how it impacts their congregations and the individuals and families within.
  • Illustrate ways congregations can work on prevention.
  • Educate secular workers about spiritual issues of concern to abuse victims, enabling them to provide professional services in a culturally competent manner.
  • Formulate skills in having open conversations about the topic of domestic violence and it’s prevalence within the church community.
  • Illustrate ways that faith communities can partner with secular groups to work toward the goal of bringing spiritual support and physical safety to both current and former abuse victims.
