Understanding Cannabis will explore the history of cannabis within Chinese medicine as well as its modern uses and consequences.
Living in the 21st century, we find that the changing laws surrounding the use of cannabis are softening and reflecting an era of other times. As laws change and fresh research is begun in earnest, we will learn more about this plant, THC, CBD, the endocannabinoid system, and how to use it to benefit humankind as well as understanding its cautions and contraindications.
Today cannabis is being used in neurological disorders such as epilepsy in children, treatment in the effects of chemotherapeutic agents, psychological disorders, end-of-life, palliative care, and more.
Dispensaries are cropping up throughout the state with their workers being trained to be herbal counselors so that they can prescribe specific strains of the herb and unique delivery systems for individuals seeking help.
Because of this changing availability and the rise of cannabis’s medical use, licensed practitioners are seeing and treating patients who are taking it for a wide range of problems. Because of this we see first hand its effects, both positive and negative as well as short term and long term. It is likely that in time we as licensed herbalists and primary care practitioners are going to have the prescriptive ability of cannabis included in our scope of practice, but at this moment it is imperative that we at least understand the complexity of cannabis, its historical use, the chemistry and effects of the various components of the endocannabinoid system, and the legal aspects of our relationship to it.
