Understanding and working with post-war theatre buildings, c. 1950-85

Between the mid-1950s and the early 1980s, Britain witnessed a boom in theatre-building, at a range of scales from modest amateur venues to such multi-auditorium complexes as the National Theatre. This workshop will set these buildings in context before exploring the particular opportunities and challenges that they present as far as capital projects are concerned – from fabric repair to significant remodeling and extension.

Suitable for: Those responsible for the overall management of post-war theatre buildings of any size, especially those in the early stages of planning a capital project.

Content: An initial discussion of the significance of these theatre and the nuts and bolts of architectural conservation practice as applied to post-war architecture will be followed by detailed case studies from a client’s perspective and the perspective of the architect. There will be ample opportunity to share information with others and to build new networks.

Speakers include: Dr Alistair Fair, University of Edinburgh; David Beidas, New Stages Limited; Catherine Croft, Twentieth-Century Society; Paddy Dillon, Director, Allies & Morrison; Dr William Filmer-Sankey, Alan Baxter and Associates.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the day you will:

• feel informed about the significances of post-war theatre architecture;

• have an understanding of the processes and philosophy of architectural conservation as applied to post-war (listed) buildings;

• understand the challenges and opportunities that these buildings present;

• be informed as to strategies for success and best practice deployed in recent case study examples;

• feel empowered to tackle capital projects.
