Event description

Description

This is poetry in the streets of Phoenix.

Poetry Slam is a competitive format in which writers and performers of all styles can perform for an audience in an interactive open mic format! Join International Poetry Interpretation Champion Aaron Hopkins-Johnson (Phoenix Poetry Slam Host at The Lost Leaf, Founder of Lawn Gnome Publishing) for an incredible new format of poetry slam in Phoenix, in the middle of First Friday Artwalk on September 6th at the old Revolver Records building.

Up to 16 poets compete for the title and a $500 grand prize, competing in a head-to-head format judged by audience applause! There's no mic. No scorecards. No venue.

First Friday Artwalk and the Underground Poetry Individual Championship of Phoenix were made possible in part by Roosevelt Row's Adaptive Reuse of Temporary Space Market, a non-profit initiative to make downtown Phoenix more walkable by activating underused space through collaborative solutions provided by arts-based programming and local small businesses.

The Underground Poetry Individual Championship (UPIC) is a competitive poetry slam format created by New York poet and organizer Harlym125, and was introduced to the National Poetry Slam community as an unofficial side event in 2009. It has remained popular and has seen competitors that have gone on to reach success through viral videos and books such as Jesse Parent (To The Boys Who May One Day Date My Daughter), and Rudy Francisco (Helium).

Poets interested in competing should visit www.lawngnomepublishing.com for information on how to register.
