In 2014 our son Kyle needed a new pair of hearing aids. His current pair of aids were twelve years old, they were in constant need of repair, and were far behind current technology. The cost of hearing aids can range between $4000 and $8000. After looking for ways to help assist in paying for the aids, I found out that most New York State insurance companies do not cover the cost of hearing aids for children and in New York State there are no means of funding or grants for children’s hearing aids. At the time I was reading a book by Marie Osmond. In the book she talked about her two older brothers that were born with hearing loss. She mentioned the Olive Osmond Hearing Fund (OOHF) that her nephew, Justin had started in honor of her mother Olive Osmond. I contacted them for information on getting support from them and within three months Kyle had brand new top of the line hearing aids at no cost to us. What an amazing gift at a time we really needed it! The only downside was that we had to travel to New Jersey every time the aids needed servicing because there were no centers in New York working with the OOHF. A year after receiving the aids our family was invited to attend the annual fundraiser that raised the money for Kyle’s aids in New Jersey. Kyle decided he wanted to raise money to bring and donate that night. His goal was to raise $250.00, within two weeks he raised $1015.00. The night of the event he presented it to Justin and Kristi Osmond. On the way home from the New Jersey event, we decided we wanted to host a fundraiser in New York to benefit the OOHF.

As we began making plans for our fundraiser, one thing that I wanted to achieve was bringing awareness of the importance of funding for children’s hearing aids to New York State. Since we were going to be raising money here in New York, I wanted children of New York to benefit from our efforts. The one concern I had was that the closest hearing center connected to OOHF was in New Brunswick, New Jersey at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. I wanted these children to have a facility in the area they lived in to go to for services. So I reached out to the Speech and Hearing Center located at North Shore LIJ Hospital in New Hyde Park. The response I received from them made me realize I was headed in the right direction to start making opportunities available to New York families. They quickly jumped on board with my plans.

Seven years later, and we are so happy to announce the beginning of the Olive Osmond Hearing Fund New York Chapter. This never would have been possible without all of the continued support we have received from our generous family, friends and donors!
