Event description
Under The Covers with Jake Armerding, Rose Cousins, Mark Erelli and Zachariah Hickman

About this Event

What makes a cover song great? Is it an unexpected pairing of artist and the material? Is it presenting a song that everyone knows in a brand new light? Is it pulling off a faithful recreation of something that seems impossible? It’s probably a little of all of that, and then some. “Under The Covers” is a long-running show featuring Jake Armerding, Rose Cousins, Mark Erelli and Zachariah Hickman, that has traditionally played to sold out crowds at Cambridge’s venerable Club Passim for the past 13 years. Every once in awhile, they take it on the road for a few select shows outside of Boston. From Joni Mitchell to C&C Music Factory, Elliott Smith to Def Leppard, Patty Griffin to the Allman Brothers Band, the only thing you can really expect from this show is the unexpected.

Rose Cousins

Originally from PEI, Rose Cousins lives in Halifax when she’s not touring internationally. Fueled by collaboration she deeply values being part of multiple music communities. Her 2012 album WE HAVE MADE A SPARK won a JUNO, 3 ECMAs, a CFMA, was long listed for the Polaris Music Prize, and made featured/best of lists in USA Today, NPR and Oprah Magazine. Her music has appeared in several TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Nashville. To make her new record NATURAL CONCLUSION, she enlisted GRAMMY award winning producer Joe Henry. The result is what Cousins calls “the most honest and vulnerable thing” she has made to date.

Mark Erelli

New England-based multi-instrumentalist Mark Erelli wears many hats--singer, songwriter, sideman, producer--but approaches each of these varied roles with a belief in the transformative power of paying attention. Bearing witness to small details and fleeting moments is what dignifies our everyday stories, rendering the mundane profound. This principle governs Erelli’s approach to his craft, and is uniquely evident on his latest release, Mixtape, which features revelatory reinterpretations of songs by the Grateful Dead, Neko Case, Roy Orbison and others.

Jake Armerding

Jake Armerding is a producer, violinist, published author and “the most gifted and promising songwriter to emerge from theBoston folk scene in years” (Boston Globe). A Boston native now relocated to Minneapolis now, he’s still creating his unholy racket of 80’s pop, Suzuki classical and New England bluegrass.

Zachariah Hickman

Originally from Lynchburg, VA, he received his formal training in jazz performance and composition from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. For most of his adult life he has toured with singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, traveling all over the world and recording 7 full-length albums. Currently, he is performing as bassist and musical director for Ray Lamontagne. He has performed at many notable venues and festivals, including Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Red Rocks, Bonaroo, Dublin Castle, The Fillmore, and the Royal Albert Hall. As a producer, Zachariah as made records with a number of talented singers, including Rose Cousins (for which he won a Canadian JUNO award), Mark Erelli, Laura Cortese, Miss Tess, and his own bluegrass band Barnstar! He has also produced and ringmastered his own circus, released his own brand of mustache wax, and runs a vaudeville style variety show, Zack Hickman’s House of Ill Repute.
