Introducing the Gadgets n Gizmos series, cooking class parties where we feature one or more of our fave kitchen appliances at home. We have fun with our toys but best of all, they make it easy for us to create sumptuous dishes when we're busy.  Playtime! 

Under Pressure!
gizmo: pressure cooker and rice cooker
Stuffed endive goat cheese canoes, Chinese Five-spice Pork Shoulder with leeks served over red rice, Roasted organic squash with sage butter sauce, Mango flambé (gluten-free)


Freddie and David may have had a different kind of pressure in mind, but we agree that we can give love, especially when we taste the results! The East-West flavor fusion came to fruition for Marlene and Jeff’s anniversary dinner. We featured a house favorite, pork shoulder, pressure-cooked to tenderness with leeks and Chinese spices, and paired it with the New England flavors of sweet roasted squash and sage. We’re replicating the menu because we love it, and know you will too. Capping the meal on either end are Stuffed endive goat cheese canoes and Mango flambé for starter and dessert.

*Note: We wiill do our best to keep the ingredients/menu exactly as written, but substitutions may be made occasionally due to market availability and our desire to find the freshest produce possible.

Take your cooking skills to the next level with The Refined Cook Culinary Series, fun social events that give you tasty tips on preparing healthy, gourmet dinners. Come with friends or meet new ones. This is a friendly gathering of up to 8 people.Your hosts are a wife and husband team who are passionate about great food and hosting sumptuous dinner parties. Learn new culinary techniques, efficient shortcuts, and unique plating ideas to elevate everyday meals into extraordinary ones. Watch and socialize or get hands-on experience in the kitchen, or a little of both.

Event details:

  • Price covers tuition and materials (you will receive a copy of recipes)
  • Class size usually 4-6 participants (we may cancel the class if minimum is not met)
  • Our ingredients are minimally, if at all, processed, and are usually organic or natural
  • Must be 21 yrs. and older (it’s BYOB)
  • Includes complimentary beverage specially selected by our resident wine consultant
  • Held in a private home in a semi-professional kitchen with first rate equipment (e.g., 6-burner Wolf range)
  • Instruction style is combination of demonstration and hands-on
  • Unless otherwise noted, venue is in Dedham
  • Private bookings for party of 6-8 available, just contact us

It’s clear Marlene and Jeff have a passion for food and for sharing everything they know about it, from interesting ingredients, to cooking techniques, to the whole dining experience. It was not just learning, but lots of laughing too!

Marlene & Jeff are founders of The Refined Cook, whose mission is to teach and bring healthy, gourmet cooking into homes through fun culinary social events (a.k.a. cooking class parties), offering a slower and sustainable lifestyle. In addition to being culinary educators, Marlene is a jazz musician who brings improvisation both in her music and in the kitchen; Jeff is a graphic arts designer, and a wine and whisky consultant and auctions purveyor. Class menus are eclectic, reflecting their love of world cuisines from travels in Asia, Patagonia, the Himalayas, the Andes, the Amazon jungle, and most recently, their cycling trip through the French Dordogne region, home of foie gras and rustic gastronomy.
