Event description

Description

Please join the Carpatho-Rusyn Society: Dallas Chapter as we honor United States soldiers of “The Greatest Generation” who served on Iwo Jima in WWII. We will first commemorate the life and sacrifice of Sergeant Michael Strank, of Carpatho-Rusyn descent. Sgt. Strank was one of the six men immortalized in the flag-raising photo on Mt. Suribachi. Sadly, he was killed in action shortly after the famous photo was taken. We'll show a short documentary film, "Our Flag Still Waves," a personal picture of Sgt. Strank, told by family members, neighbors and veterans.

In the second part of our program, we'll hear a first-hand account of the battle to win Mt. Suribachi from Corporal Don Graves, a local WWII veteran. Don’s story of the harrowing experience on Iwo Jima will have you riveted to your seat as you see battle through his eyes. Don’t miss this exciting program!

We'll begin at 2:00 PM with refreshments. The program will be from 2:30 to 4:30 PM. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. Carpatho-Rusyn Society is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Space is limited. Please register to assure a place. Free parking is available at the Environmental Education Center and in a parking lot just across the street.
