Event description

This is an introductory training on the practice of unarmed civilian protection and peacekeeping. Unarmed civilian protection (UCP) is an emerging methodology for the direct protection of civilians under threats and for localized violence reduction. It challenges the assumption that peacekeeping and civilian protection requires the use of weapons.

UCP involves civilians protecting civilians in situations of violent conflict, imminent violence, and post-crisis situations. The practice of UCP is nonviolent and nonpartisan. Protection is provided on invitation from local actors, and it supports local actors as they work to address the roots and consequences of violent conflict. UCP is grounded in international law, in the principle of civilian immunity in war, and in the protection afforded by international conventions. Training includes short presentations, group activities, and practice.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to apply field-tested strategies that create space for local actors to transform conflicts, protect human rights defenders and others made vulnerable by the conflict, and support peacekeeping initiatives.
