Event description

Description

Free and open to all - this festive and inspiring event will feature one of the world’s foremost experts and champions of the United Nations, Stephen Schlesinger. Author of Art of Creation: The Founding of the United Nations, and current fellow at The Century Foundation, Mr. Schlesinger will discuss both the UN’s practical and symbolic importance in protecting and promoting human rights and democracy.

A reception follows with food, drinks, music, plus fantastic networking with Brooklyn activists, educators, policy professionals, government representatives, students and other neighbors.

The United Nations Association of the U.S.A., an organization made up of 180 chapters nation-wide, such as the Brooklyn Chapter, encourages us this year to look inward (at the U.S.) as we celebrate UN Day and the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They are doing so because America is at a juncture in history when respect for human rights are backpedaling, especially as they apply to immigrants and refugees. As Americans, as we look to address human rights violations globally, we must strive harder than ever to protect the human rights of Americans and everyone who lives here, too!

In that spirit, help the United Nations Association's Brooklyn Chapter hold up this torch of commitment to a more peaceful and just planet and join us for UN Day!

RSVP here to reserve your place and get event updates for Brooklyn UN Day! (The event is free but seating is limited.)

We can’t say enough about how happy and lucky we are to have Stephen Schlesinger as our keynote speaker. A fellow at The Century Foundation, he is one of the world’s leading experts on and proponents of the UN, as it is today, and its great potential for tomorrow. Among many accomplishments and leadership roles in his career, Mr. Schlesinger is the author of Act of Creation: The Founding of the United Nations, led the World Policy Institute at the New School, and worked for United Nations Habitat. He is a frequent contributor to magazines and newspapers, including the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, and the New York Observer. He has appeared on CNN, Fox TV, NPR, NBC, Book TV, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, Christopher Matthews “Hardball” and Chuck Todd’s “Daily Rundown.”
