Umatter® Suicide Prevention Awareness and Practice is an interactive, 60-minute virtual workshop. Umatter® is a national best practice program for suicide prevention. The message behind Umatter® is “you matter because you may need help, and you matter because you may be in a position to help.” Through presentation, and experiential learning with a time for you to practice a three step process, you will learn why suicide prevention is important, what the risk and protective factors for suicide are, how to recognize a warning sign, what to say and do, and how to get help. Resources for ongoing help and support will be provided.


1) Review correct language when talking about suicide

2) Introduce and grow understanding of the role of Gatekeeper

2) Review statistics, both for Vermont and nationally, related to suicide 

3) Discuss protective and risk factors, and warning signs

4) Begin the discussion of the 3 step intervention process

5) Practice talking/asking about suicide

6) Identify additional resources for referral, help and training 

7) Conclude with one action step related to suicide prevention


1 hour approved through the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation for:

  • Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors
  • Allied Mental Health
  • Psychological Examiners
  • Social Workers

Who Should Attend?

This webinar is for all staff in health care, mental health organizations, primary care and hospitals, schools and community settings interested in suicide prevention skills and the framework for suicide safer care. It provides basic information for all involved in a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention, and prior to the adoption of advanced practices in a pathway to care.
