Training Description:

This 2-day workshop will focus on the following topics:

Day 1: You're Going to Love this Kid! - Participants will learn practical ways of supporting students with autism spectrum labels & other disabilities within a general education classroom. Topics addressed include listening to the voices of those with autism, creating more active and responsive lessons, providing opportunities for communication and social skill development, and using fascinations and special interests as a support tool.

Day 2: From Text Maps to Memory Caps: Differentiating Instruction in K-12 Classrooms - Educators will learn strategies and adaptations to engage, motivate, support, and inspire a diverse group of students by creating classroom games, study aids, visual supports, teaching tools, and review materials.

Training Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Explain the benefits of inclusive schools for students with autism.
  • List at least ten ideas for adapting curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of learners on the autism spectrum.
  • Discuss techniques for supporting the development of communication and social skills competencies in inclusive classrooms.
  • Discuss at least 3-5 active/collaborative learning techniques and/or structures appropriate for the inclusive classroom.
  • Explain how to use instructional materials to differentiate instruction.
  • List ideas for integrating materials into daily instruction for the purpose of meeting academic standards and/or supporting individual learning objectives.
