About Theory U

If you attended some of humankind’s monthly Listening Labs, you have already heard about Theory U. It’s a process designed to transform the deepening dysfunctions in the ecological, socio-economical, and spiritual equilibrium of our planet. Theory U provides a process and tools to take action (such as learning to listen in deeper ways) that are informed less by old information and thought habits and more by the future that wants to be born through what we do, individually and together.

Theory U was formalized by Otto Scharmer, MIT Senior Lecturer and co-founder of the MIT’s Presencing Institute. You can learn more about Theory U on the Presencing Institute website or listen to Scharmer on YouTube.

About u.lab

u.lab is a free online course that explores Theory U. Over the 12-week course (September 20 to December 20), humankind is hosting a “hub” for San Diego. A hub consists of a group of people who come together to go through the milestones of the u.lab process. How much you want or are able to invest in the process is totally up to you.

You can join the online course at any point during these 12 weeks - there’s some catching up to do, of course, but it’s possible. In the same way, you can join our San Diego hub at any point, if you want to discuss and practice the tools with us...

More info on u.lab can be found here.

What the San Diego hub members have chosen to do together:

We started meeting at the very end of September, but you can still join our group! We have chosen to meet every week for about 90 minutes (Collective Impact Center, 3295 Meade Ave), and to focus our meetings alternatively on:

  • Discussing the online materials and tools for each of the modules of the course, and practice together the main tools offered - this is an experiential learning process, and the tools have to be tried and used concretely, for the process to start making sense;

  • Using a peer-coaching process that is a crucial part of the course: every 2 weeks, one of the group members has a turn at being the “case giver” on the topic of their choice, and receives feedback from the group in the distinctive and powerful Theory U manner.

Each weekly meeting is an opportunity to connect deeply with one another and to evolve together on our personal and collective path! We explore other ways to motivate each other, to experience the tools and concepts more in depth or more lively, and connect, exchange, coordinate and manage the hub together while practicing u.lab tools.

If you’re interested in joining the u.lab and the San Diego hub, register for the course with the Presencing Institute or through their online registration system at edEx, but to join the hub supported by humankind, please register also through this Eventbrite page. To be sure you get the most up-to-date scheduling information, notify the hub organizer of your registration by emailing her at delphine@humankindsandiego.org.
