UHURU DAYS LYCEUMS
Welcome to UHURU DAYS LYCEUMS!
Uhuru Season: 17 Days of Freedom, a virtual community gathering honoring the voices of the formerly enslaved and the freedoms they were once denied.
What Is Uhuru Season?
Uhuru means “freedom” in Swahili. Uhuru Season: 17 Days of Freedom is a cultural and educational initiative created to honor the legacy of Black American celebrations of freedom between Juneteenth (June 19th) and July 5th. These 17 days serve as a time of reflection and remembrance of the freedoms once denied to enslaved Black people in the United States.
Why June 19 – July 5?
June 19 (Juneteenth) marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally freed—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
July 5 was a day historically used by free Black communities to celebrate American Independence as a statement of protest and hope—claiming space in a country that had yet to honor its promises of liberty for all.
What Happens Each Day?
- Each day, a “Freedom of the Day”—a specific right that was once denied to enslaved people—is highlighted. These freedoms range from education, movement, and family, to speech and ownership. Through reflection, we explore how these freedoms are expressed today, and how we continue to protect and expand them.
- Each evening at 8:17 PM, a reader will read a short, powerful excerpt from a formerly enslaved person's writings. After the reading, a host will guide a brief conversation on that day’s highlighted freedom and its relevance today.
