Field Tour Topics :

Speaker: Dr. William Crow

Title: Nematode diagnosis and management 2019

Abstract: Several nematode management experiments ongoing at PSREU will be shown and discussed. A FGCSA/GCSAA funded experiment to improve diagnostics of lance nematode on ultradwarf bermudagrass ongoing at PSREU will be shown and discussed.

Speaker: Dr. Adam Dale

Title: Progress and future directions of mixed cultivar St. Augustinegrass studies

Abstract: This session will discuss progress towards developing new cultural pest management tactics for St. Augustinegrass lawns. Specifically, we will discuss southern chinch bug management and caterpillar management. Attendees will also be given an opportunity to partake in an interactive, hands-on activity.

Speaker: Dr. Philip Harmon

Title: Turfgrass Disease Diagnostics Management Update

Abstract: This session will discuss recent trends in diagnostic data from the Rapid Turf Diagnostic Service. Fungicide efficacy trial data for important diseases of turfgrass will be presented including application method.

Speaker: Dr. J. Bryan Unruh

Title: Nutsedge Control Options for Turf

Abstract: Nutsedge is a common weed in landscape, golf, and athletic turf. A number of herbicide options are available for use. Attendees will observe results from an onsite demonstration study.

Speaker: Jamie Buhlman

Title: Measuring Mowing Requirements of ProVista St. Augustinegrass - An Update

Abstract: This session will present data about the mowing requirements of St. Augustinegrass lines that are part of Scotts ProVista development program. This is an update on the same trial presented last year.

Speaker: Dr. Kevin Kenworthy

Title: Breeding Tour of Advanced Trials

Abstract: Participants will get an overview of advanced trials of zoysiagrass for putting greens, bermudagrass and zoysiagrass fairway trials and the latest data will be shared from the 2016 NTEP St. Augustinegrass Trial. Information learned from this session will help golf course superintendents know the progress of funded research and allow them to see things that will be coming to the industry in the near future. Those in the landscape industry will learn more about CitraBlue, its performance in the NTEP trial and advantages for use in landscapes.

Speaker: Dr. Ken Quesenberry

Title: Zoysiagrass and St. Augustinegrass Shade Trials

Abstract: Separate trials of zoysiagrass and St. Augustinegrass were planted as sod in June 2018 under oak tree canopies providing dense shade. Field day attendees will learn first hand which entries of each species are the most shade tolerant through personal observation and from data presented to the group. Information learned will help landscapers make the best decisions for clientele with shade issues in their landscapes.

Speaker: Dr. Jason Kruse

Title: Drought response of St. Augustinegrasses

Abstract: This session will present data about the drought response of commercially available St. Augustinegrasses compared to St. Augustinegrass lines that are part of the Scotts ProVista development program.

Speaker: Emily Tharp

Title: Shade tolerance of new bermudagrass cultivars for fairway use

Abstract: This session discusses bermudagrass cultivars that are newer to the market compared with older industry standards and how they perform under an oak canopy. While most studies look at neutral shade, this project’s approach allows us to see how these grasses do under dense natural shade, as well as being in competition with tree roots for other resources.

Speaker: Natasha Restuccia

Title: Wear tolerance of new bermudagrass cultivars for fairway use

Abstract: This session will discuss bermudagrass cultivars that are newer to the market compared with older industry standards and how they perform under traffic conditions. Determining the wear tolerance of these grasses will help superintendents make the best decisions on which cultivars will best suit their courses needs.

Speaker: Dr. John Erickson

Title: Evaluation of advanced warm-season grass breeding lines under limited irrigation.

Abstract: Participants will get an overview of results from our multi-university USDA project evaluating performance of advanced breeding lines and some recently released varieties of zoysiagrass, bermudagrass, St. Augustinegrass, and seashore paspalum under limited irrigation. Information learned from this session will help attendees better understand irrigation requirements for maintaining turf quality for these species and which entries performed best under limited irrigation inputs.
