Event description

Description

In what The New York Times calls her "wonderful new memoir," Slow Medicine: A Way to Healing, Victoria Sweet uses her experience as a physician to reveal the myriad ethical challenges facing clinicians today.

Clinical work is at once a science, a craft, an art, and a profession. What are the challenges to virtuous practice in the health professions? Using stories from Slow Medicine, Dr. Sweet will ask: “What is the true meaning of responsibility? What does it mean to honor, truly, a patient’s wishes?"

A Guggenheim Fellow (2014-15), Dr. Sweet is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Her Ph.D. in medical history was awarded by UCSF. For over twenty years she practiced medicine at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco, the God's Hotel of her first book.

Copies of Slow Medicine and God’s Hotel will be available for purchase starting at 3:30pm outside of HSW-300. Dr. Sweet will be signing books during the reception.
