UCLAx Silicon Beach Innovation Lab presents

Cybersecurity Conference

Join us for our Cybersecurity Conference where we will discuss the current state of cybersecurity, the best security defensive measures, and how to secure your cloud before becoming a victim.

Keynote Speaker: David Cass, IBM

David Cass is a VP, Global Partner, and Chief Information Security Officer of IBM Cloud and SaaS. David also serves on the Executive Board of Directors of UCLAx Silicon Beach Innovation Lab.

Keynote topic: The State of Cybersecurity:

Technology, Business, and Law

 Additional presenters include:

Defense in Depth: Define different normals, monitor for abnormals, take action

It's a harsh reality for companies and organizations to know that they are going to be breached at some point with 100% certainty. In this session, we will talk about the security defensive measures that should be implemented.  In this session, I will give you a recipe to craft the best security solution to defend any environment. Borrowing from Defense-in-Depth strategy, baselining, monitoring, taking action and using quantum resistant encryption to defend even against the most determined attacker.

Presenter: Carlos Villegas, Cyber Security Engineer at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, Redondo Beach, CA

Is Cloud Secure? Cybersecurity in the Cloud Age

As the internet has evolved, so has the sharing economy. Now companies think about cloud before buying hardware for their data-center, much like people think about Uber before buying a car. As organizations flock towards the cloud, there are several questions that arise: How secure is my data in the cloud? What is my responsibility while taking advantage of on-demand resource availability? This talk will focus on some of the latest thinking on how to secure your cloud access before you become a victim.

Presenter: Kalpesh Sheth, Co-founder and CEO of YAXA, a cybersecurity software company in Boston, MA

Insider Threats Defense

Insider Threats pose one of the highest cyber risks to any organization because of access. An individual with sufficient credentials can defeat any defense. New behaviorally based approaches can help to reduce the likelihood and impact of insider attacks.

Presenter: Wayne Wheeler, aerospace senior security analyst

Rethinking Cybersecurity Management

The cybersecurity threat landscape has changed dramatically in the past five years. In fact, change has occurred so fast that it has outpaced previously sound security practices.  The 20-year old comfortable habits of randomly deploying firewalls and point products are no longer effective in protecting us from the latest digital threats. The primary challenge is that there are simply not enough people with the cybersecurity skills to meet market demand. It is widely known, especially in the hacker community, that there are nearly two million open security expert positions today, making it easier for the hacker’s attacks to be effective.  The good news is we can address the cyber expert shortage if businesses will rethink their approach to security.

Presenter: Tom Ayers, CEO of N-Dimension, a Managed Cyber Security Service Provider focuses on smart energy networks

Tutorial Session:  Building Human Firewalls

A lot of businesses have implemented equipment and software to help ensure the safety of their systems and data.  As businesses work to strengthen these perimeters, hackers more and more are moving to the weakest link of security, the people.  There have been a number of reports in recent years of high profile hacking incidents.  Industry needs to pay attention to this avenue of attack and do something to shore up the weakness.  UCLA Extension has been working to improve the knowledge of their employees to recognize suspicious email and other elements to ensure the safety of our student’s data.  We will share what we have done and how we implemented our program to instill a culture of caution.

Presenter: James Zack, Interim Director of Information Technology Services of UCLA Extension
