Event description

Description

The Higher Education Conference, in its 23rd annual rotation, serves to provide students from neighboring middle and high schools with an engaging and uplifting perspective on seizing their right to higher education. The students are brought to UCLA’s campus for a day to participate in the conference that will be held on February 22nd, 2020. Throughout the day, students will have an unprecedented opportunity to learn about the importance and benefits of obtaining a degree from a higher education institution. UCLA faculty, student organizations, students and community liaisons will lead workshops addressing student needs and concerns regarding college academics, enrollment, and admissions obstacles in preparation for their post-secondary academic journey.

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

We accept students from seventh to twelfth grade as well as school chaperones/parent chaperones.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Each school will have a bus that will transport them to and from the conference. If you want to provide your own transportation, drop off will be at Dickson Court. The closest parking structure is Parking Structure 5 or Parking Structure 3. Rates vary from $8-$12/day.

What can I bring into the event?

You can bring anything so long as it is appropriate for an educational field trip. We recommend a pen and notepad for notetaking. Remember to wear comfortable shoes seeing as we will be doing quite a bit of walking. One should also bring a light jacket due to any potential changes in the weather.

Will food be provided?

Yes. We will serve both breakfast and lunch in addition to snacks and refreshments throughout the day.

How will the students benefit from the conference?

Students will have an unprecedented opportunity to learn about the importance and benefits of obtaining a degree from any higher education institution. UCLA faculty, student organizations, and community liaisons will lead workshops addressing student needs and ultimately provide young Black scholars with the necessary tools to take control of their education.

Is there a conference theme?

The theme this year is “BAE U: Black and Educated University”. Workshops will discuss what it means to be both Black and Educated simultaneously and dispel misconceptions that you cannot be both.

What if students are unsure about going to college or do not plan to go to college after high school? Will the conference still benefit them?

Yes. While we are pushing for college after high school, we understand that this may not be the reality for some students, such as seniors. We want to ensure students are taking the necessary steps to receive an education in general, whatever that may look like for them.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

If you have any questions, direct message our Instagram @hec_blackbruins or email the Outreach and Recruitment Chair, brittanyjasper@gmail.com.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

There should be no need seeing as these are free. Simply create a new registration form for any new attendee.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

No. They should be the same person.
