Event description

Description

Professors Michael Lens and Michael Stoll will present research findings of the UCLA Misdemeanor Arrests Project in Los Angeles. Using data from the LAPD, City Attorney’s Office, and other sources, the research examined trends in misdemeanor arrests in Los Angeles over the past two decades and any impacts of the charge type and key demographics on these changes. It will also examine the types of misdemeanors processed by the City Attorney’s Office and how these trends have changed over the same period by key demographic and other important characteristics.

The Misdemeanor Arrests Project at UCLA is a two-year initiative that aims to form partnerships between UCLA, law enforcement, and criminal justice agencies. The project aims to help build data analytic infrastructure and capacity to examine trends and outcomes of misdemeanors in the City of Los Angeles. Led by faculty at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and funded by the Arnold Foundation, this project is also part of a larger Research Network on Misdemeanor Arrests taking place in seven other jurisdictions across the county that are bringing together law enforcement agencies, courts, corrections, and other criminal justice agencies to work with university based research institutions to examine trends in the enforcement and disposition of low-level offenses. Part of this effort is captured in an article in a recent edition of Translational Criminology, http://cebcp.org/wp-content/TCmagazine/TC13-Fall2017, located on page 20-23.

The program on Friday March 22nd will feature brief opening remarks by City Attorney Mike Feuer, Police Chief Michael Moore (invited), UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs Dean Gary Segura; presentation of main findings of the research project; and a panel conversation of representatives from the City Attorney’s Office, LAPD, , and others regarding the implications of the report findings. Food and refreshments will be served.
