Event Details

The Urban Conservancy honors individuals and organizations who are changing the way the rest of us think about our city. This year, we are thrilled to recognize the work of three of New Orleans’ most intrepid visionaries: David Waggonner, Katrina Brees, and Emelda Paul.

Please join us for food (thanks, Michael Joyner Caterer, St. James Cheese Company, and Laurel Street Bakery!), drink (thanks, Pearl Wine Co., Abita Beer, and Pal's Lounge!), music (Sweet Crude!), and inspiration (see below) as we honor our 2013 Urban Heroes.

Tickets double as your Urban Conservancy membership dues for 2014. Even if you can’t attend the event, your membership is important to us!

Our 2013 Urban Heroes

Katrina Brees launched I Heart Louisiana in 2012 to provide Carnival krewes with locally produced alternatives to mass-produced Mardi Gras beads.  Katrina is the founder of The Bearded Oysters Dance Troupe and Krewe of Kolossos and co-producer of hundreds of Louisiana parades. I Heart Louisiana is the outgrowth of the Greening the Gras conference that Katrina organized in 2012, a platform to connect the community with solutions to the ecological and health concerns of Mardi Gras beads.

Emelda Paul is a Lafitte Greenway advocate and neighborhood leader. A 30-year resident of the Lafitte housing development, Emelda testified before Congress for the right of her fellow residents to return after Katrina. She is president of the Faubourg Lafitte Tenants Association and an active member of the Providence Board, the Lafitte Greenway Steering Advisory Committee, and her church, St. Peter Claver. She is also a Senior Companion Volunteer at Touro Infirmary.

David Waggonner initiated the Dutch Dialogues conferences in the years after Hurricane Katrina to articulate a new vision of New Orleans as a city living with – rather than against – water. Out of these conferences, a regional strategy addressing sustainable storm water management called the Greater New Orleans Urban Water Plan has emerged. David is the president of Waggonner & Ball, an award-winning, internationally active architectural design and planning practice.
