Black Male Student

Success in College Symposium

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

12:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M.

University of California, Irvine | Crystal Cove Auditorium

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Director for the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, has recently released the landmark report Black Male Student Success in Higher Education: A Report from the National Black Male College Achievement Study.

“For nearly a decade, I have argued that those who are interested in Black male student success have much to learn from Black men who have actually been successful.” – Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Fostering diversity remains a fundamental value in American higher education; however, in reality, not all student populations are equally engaged in long-term retention and academic success. The gap for Black male students is substantial and persistent, despite myriad strategies, programs, and policies. Shaun Harper’s groundbreaking research demonstrates that we must change our paradigm in regard to Black male student success, and this Symposium is focused on doing just that. Bringing together Dr. Harper and an impressive array of students, faculty, and staff from Southern California colleges and universities, the Black Male Student Success in College Symposium will allow us to understand issues unique to the Black male student experience and begin to fashion appropriate solutions to eliminate the participation and performance gap.

UC Irvine invites you to engage in this symposium on one of the most pressing issues facing our nation and higher education.

Light refreshments will be provided.
