Arkansas Aging Initiative and The Arkansas Geriatric Education Collaborative

The Arkansas Aging Initiative, a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, was created to develop and implement a statewide program of comprehensive geriatric health care and education for healthcare providers and senior citizens living in rural Arkansas.

The Arkansas Aging Initiative has formed partnerships with local and regional hospitals, Area Health Education Centers, the Area Agency on Aging, the Division of Adult and Aging Services of the Department of Health, local communities, colleges, and universities.

Using these partnerships, the Arkansas Aging Initiative has established the following comprehensive Regional Centers on Aging: South Arkansas Center on Aging in El Dorado; West Central Center on Aging of Fort Smith; Center on Aging-Northeast of Jonesboro; South Central Center on Aging in Pine Bluff; Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education of Springdale, with its satellite center at Bella Vista; Texarkana Regional Center on Aging of Texarkana; and the Oaklawn Center on Aging in Hot Springs.

The Arkansas Aging Initiative, utilizing its network of Regional Centers on Aging, makes access to specialized interdisciplinary geriatric healthcare and education programs available to senior citizens, their families, and members of the community living within a 60-mile radius.

The Arkansas Geriatric Education Collaborative (AGEC) operates under a grant made possible by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The goal of the AGEC is to enhance the quality of health care for elderly Arkansans through increased educational and training opportunities for health professionals (faculty, students, and practitioners), paraprofessionals, direct care workers and family care givers in Arkansas.
