Description

Course Description:

Twyla Tharp is an extraordinarily productive and innovative dancer/choreographer who has produced some 160 works since the debut of her "Tank Dive" in 1965. Her book, "The Creative Habit: Learn it and Use it For Life", is a meditation on the sources of creativity, drawn from her experience. The premise of the book is that habit, hard work, and self-knowledge play the central role in a life devoted to creative enterprise.

Tharp begins with the empty room (the empty page, the blank canvas), then leads us through the preparations that have enabled her to consistently produce stunning works of art. Our purpose in this seminar is to cloak ourselves in Tharp's wisdom, and apply it (at least as a thought experiment) to our own creative practice.

By approaching "The Creative Habit" together, and by being accountable to one another, participants will get more from the book than they would by reading it alone. We will use class meetings to understand and reflect on the chapters of the book; we will use the time between meetings to work on the exercises that end each chapter, adapting them as needed to fit our own sensibilities.

Course Materials:

Participants must purchase Tharp's book "The Creative Habit", and have read the first two chapters before the first meeting. Also required are a journal or notebook, and various materials you are likely to have on hand needed to complete the exercises. Participants will be expected to commit time outside of class to fully benefit from this seminar.

Course Topics:

Each meeting of the seminar will address one or two chapters of Tharp's book. Topics include Habit and Hope, Beginning, Identity and Self-Knowledge, Memory and Metaphor, Cataloging Ideas, Finding Ideas, Preparation, Intent, Craft, Working, How to Fail, Mastery and Hope.

Students can expect to develop insight into Twyla Tharp's creative engine, and discover how it might apply (or not apply) to themselves.

The course will be 9 sessions long and will not be held the week of Halloween.

Course Fee:
$149
