Event Details

This Two-Hour Seminar will be held at the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute:
6324 Marchand Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15206

October 18th, 2019 9:00AM - 11:00AM

Brief Description:
Research indicates that client spirituality can be an essential source of inspiration and energy for client change as well as at times being a barrier to therapeutic goals.  How do we navigate the complexities of ultimate topics?  What does it look like to honor our client’s spirituality, religion and values while walking in authenticity and integrity with our own? Come consider some of the thorny areas of this question through a case study discussion. The case study will be realistic (drawing on the facilitator’s compiled client experience) but not specific to a particular client.
Continuing Education Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1. By using a realistic client situation, consider some of the ins and outs of including spirituality in therapy in a particular client situation.
2. Consider how appropriate spiritual response is affected by the therapist’s faith background.
3. Discuss how the principles that apply in this case generalize more widely in therapeutic practice.
4. Learn principles of spiritually integrated therapy drawn from experts like Kenneth Pargament and Harold Koenig.

Rachel Kornfield Becker, LCSW

Rachel studied Sociology and Christian Formation and Ministry at Wheaton College (2007) and Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh (MSW, 2014).  As of 2014, Rachel started practicing soul care at Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute through individual and couples counseling.  Throughout that time, Rachel has considered spiritual integration in her work a priority and continually explored, researched, read and deepened her use of spiritual integration with a diversity of clients.  Rachel believes that every individual is on a journey of healing and spiritual discovery.  She takes joy in joining her clients and seminar participants wherever they find themselves in that process.
