Tween Book Club: Betty Before X by Ilyasah Shabazz
Event Information
Description
***Meeting rescheduled to January 24 at 5 PM***
Everyone has heard of Dr. Betty Shabazz, the illustrious wife of activist Malcom X, but her childhood is not as well known. This book, written by her third daughter, Ilyasah, tells the story of four tumultous years in her young life. It is a window on the realities of growing up as an African American child in Detroit in the late 1940s.
Participants must read the book before the meeting of the club, where we will discuss the themes and ideas in the book. Parents are encouraged to read and attend with their children and do not have to register separately. Cookies and Lavender Lemonade (as Betty makes in the book) will be served.
