Description

The Empowerment Collaborative joins Tuskegee Airmen DODO Chapter!

The Young Eagles is a program developed by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to introduce children, ages 8 to 17 to the exciting world of flight. The Young Eagles program encourages volunteer EAA pilots to volunteer their time, aircraft, and fuel to give free introductions to aeronautics to the children. During most years, we average about 40 new Young Eagles each month that the weather permits us to fly. The program includes a ground orientation to the principles of flight, an introduction to the aircraft’s systems and controls, and, of course, the highlight, an introductory flight where the child can experience the joy and excitement of flight first-hand. The Young Eagles program is fully insured and has an excellent safety record.

After each flight, the child receives a special certificate signed by his or her pilot and the child’s name is entered in the World’s Largest Logbook at the EAA Air Adventure Museum at EAA headquarters in Oshkosh. The goal of the program is to introduce as many children as possible to aviation.

This Chicago-area program is offered year round, weather permitting, on the second Saturday of each month at the Gary-Chicago International Airport. More than 7,000 young people have already participated in the Chicago-area program and more than 1.2 million have participated nationally.
All Young Eagle candidates will receive complimentary transportation to Gary, an orientation flight, airfield tours, and take part in aviation career and educational lectures. They also have the opportunity to meet some of the original Tuskegee Airmen.
Each Young Eagle must be accompanied to the Gary Airport by a parent or guardian in order to participate. Members receive an official Young Eagles Flight Certificate, logbook and a set of pilot wings commemorating their first flight. Volunteer EAA or Tuskegee Airmen chapter member pilots are welcome. Famous volunteers include Brigadier General Chuck Yeager and actor Harrison Ford.

ABOUT THE EMPOWERMENT COLLABORATIVE

At DePaul University, resident and adjunct faculty, staff, students and alumni from several colleges collaborate to implement a city-wide EMPOWERMENT COLLABORATION to address the roots of poverty, racism, and violence in Chicago’s marginalized communities. Individually created initiatives at different points in time over the past six years by Dr. Strohschen; Dr. Hall; Dr. Scott; Dr. Murphy; Dr. Mason; Prof. Standberry Wallace; Prof. Steward; Shannon Stone-Winding; Derrick Winding; and Prof. Stockman united to fulfill a need in the areas that may need the most over the last 2 years under the umbrella of Plate45 Institute.

Going far beyond service learning approaches, the EMPOWERMENT COLLABORATION generates collaboration among community activists, business leaders, elected officials, churches, and community residents. In tandem with the material and human resources of University, programs, events, and activities of the EMPOWERMENT COLLABORATION are co-designed by, with, and for community stakeholders with foci on education, civic engagement, economic development, and entrepreneurship.
