The Turnrow Appalachian Farm Collective invites you to learn how to scale up production and grow your farm business profitably. This free 3 day training presented in partnership with Family Farmed is for farmers who want to learn about opportunities to grow their business to meet the market demands of organized produce buyers like Turnrow. Learn how to grow, harvest, and package for larger buyers.

Day 1 training: Meeting the needs and values of produce buyers is fundamental to creating a healthy long-term relationship. How to actively seek buyers is just the start. Who is your customer and why do they buy? Maintaining the relationship requires attention to details from bunch sizes, labels, and lot codes, contracts, pricing, communication, sequential planting, quality control, trends and more. Learn how to serve the larger markets with Turnrow and its partners and make your farm a highly desired source of fresh produce. Participants are learning about all aspects of care before harvest, after harvest, all the way to the consumer, using proper cold chain techniques.

Day 2 training: Food safety planning and its benefits for your farm and accessing new markets!

How we handle our product affects the postharvest quality and safety of our food, and our relationships with buyers. Learn how to Integrate food safety systems into postharvest practices and develop farm systems that are viable, cost-effective, and scale appropriately. Every farm is different and buyers in all markets are increasingly expecting farmers to be proactive about the safety of the products they sell. This training is hands-on and designed for active learning and will include a tour of a GAP and organic certified farm. We will do risk assessments in the classroom to identify potential hazards, analyze how they move on our farms, and determine if we need to take action or not. We will also develop record keeping/traceability systems that align with the farm work, support decision-making, and maximize profitability while also meeting food safety requirements. Class participants receive a free 3-ring binder food safety plan template. This training course may satisfy staff training requirements as described in the FSMA Produce Safety Rule and prepare you for GAP certification. (Lunch Provided)

Day 3 training: Maintaining the cold chain from harvest to delivery

Provided by West Virginia State University Extension, this training seeks to create longer-lasting fruits and vegetables by providing small farmers with education and resources regarding cold chain technology. Cold chain technology refers to the proper refrigeration and storage of crops during the time between harvest by the farmer and end purchase by the consumer to help ensure peak freshness. The need to prolong crop life from farm to table has become more visible as the local foods movement has gained momentum in West Virginia and nationwide. (Lunch Provided)
