Description

Walking in the footsteps of London’s most famous Lord Mayor

Meet from 1pm at St Michael Paternoster Royal, College Hill, London EC4R 2RL for a 1.15pm start

Join us for a walking tour of significant sites in the life and legend of Richard “Dick” Whittington and his celebrated cat. The tour will be led by Wing Commander Mike Dudgeon OBE DL, a City of London Guide, former Master Mercer and former Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London.

Our meeting point is St Michael Paternoster Royal, a church with many links to Dick Whittington, including being his final resting place. St Michael’s is also currently home to the Mission of Seafarers and the office of the Bishop of London.

A short walk will take us to St Mary-le-Bow, the church of the iconic Bow Bells and the permanent home of the Court of Arches, where regular sittings include those to confirm the election of each new diocesan bishop in the southern province of the Church of England. The current incumbent, Reverend George Bush, will talk to us about this fascinating church, the current form of which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

After a brief stroll to see Guildhall Yard we are invited for a guided visit to Mercers’ Hall, home to the premier livery company of the City of London. We will be treated to a tour of this fascinating building, which is not usually open to the public and houses its own chapel, before being served high tea.

This event will raise funds for our charitable work supporting churches and chapels throughout the UK.

We are grateful to the Mercers’ Company for their help and support in providing this exciting new event for supporters.
