Description

Class Description: Through presentations and class exercises, participants will learn how to integrate science with practical turfgrass maintenance while minimizing impacts on the environment.

  • Use fertilizers, pesticides effectively to save time and money, and minimize environmental impacts, yet produce turfgrass that meets your expectations.
    • Understand the life cycle of turfgrass and common weeds and use this information to more effectively manage turfgrass.
    • Take and read soil test results to select the proper fertilizer and apply it at the correct rates.
    • Irrigate more efficiently and effectively.
    • Ensure that mowing and other practices protect turfgrass health and minimize impacts on surface and groundwater.

Take home a manual and a matrix designed to guide better decision-making based on your soils and exposure, and your turfgrass quality expectations.

This 6-hour long class is taught by two instructors, an environmental professional, and an agronomist, horticulturist and/or a hands-on maintenance professional.

Optional Certification: At the end of the class, an optional certification test is offered which will provide you with voluntary certification in turfgrass maintenance best practices.

MS4 - Municipal Employee Training: This class can be used to meet your MS4 employee training requirements under Minimum Control Measure 6. The class starts off with a discussion of the impacts of turfgrass maintenance on stormwater, lakes and streams. The remainder of the class teaches the employee how to reduce these impacts through adoption of more efficient and stormwater-friendly practices.

Target Audience: City park departments, schools, property managers, and private maintenance companies. This class does not cover golf course or athletic field maintenance.
