WE ARE CURRENTLY AT FULL CAPACITY FOR THIS EVENT. The Tufts Career Center is excited to invite you to participate in this SOPHOMORES ONLY career event. Register early for the summit and be one of the first attendees to select from a variety of breakout sessions. Please read the session descriptions on the previous page and choose one session for each of the three breakouts. You will receive a confirmation that lists your selections once you complete your registration.

Discover.  Engage.  Connect.  You are cordially invited to attend our annual Sophomore Career Summit at Tufts University.  This will be a day of career readiness and networking activities that allow you to connect with alumni and other professionals, learn about internship search strategies and options, enjoy good food, door-prizes, and more!  

By registering, students agree to attend all activities that are part of the Summit.

10:00 am: Participant Check-in & Continental Breakfast

10:45 am: Welcome & Keynote Speaker, Mona Green International Relations’12,  Motivational Speaker and Founder, NAMASME

12:00 pm: Breakout Session #1

12:45 pm: Lunch & Speed Learning  ( After lunch, students will be able to participate in two 20-minute speed learning sessions. Topics will include, Alumni Mentoring, Unpaid Internships, Interviewing, Approaching Faculty for Recommendations and many more topics ! )

2:15 pm: Breakout Session #2

3:15 pm: Breakout Session #3

4:00 pm: Closing Reception w/ Light Bites



 You will have the opportunity to choose one from each breakout on the registration page.  SELECTIONS are on a first-come first served basis.

Wayfinding with Greg Victory

You may be tempted to think that you need to "do it all" to get the most from your Tufts experience. However, we know from experience that this kind of thinking can often lead to undue stress and strain for many students...and often does not result in the intended goal! This interactive session will give you a preview on how to apply design thinking strategies to explore college, career and life experiences and how they map to your future opportunities.

Choosing the “Right” Internship for Me

Want to do an internship this summer but not sure where to start? In this session, we’ll discuss how to know if an internship is “right” for you and set goals for your summer. Then, you’ll learn about resources to get you started with your search.

Handshake 2.0 : Beyond the Basics

In this breakout session you will become a Handshake Super-user. Learn how to create a competitive profile and get on employers’ radars. We will go over the settings, skills, and resources to make you stand out and utilize that platform to its fullest potential. Discover how Handshake is a power tool for students in all majors, with thousands of opportunities, in all types of industries, in locations all over the world!

Lessons of Resilience Learned My Sophomore Year…..

This session will feature a student panel of juniors/seniors who will share their strategies for getting through sophomore year. We will also talk about how to have more positive and less stressful conversations with others related to your career exploration and goals.

Networking Success

For many, the concept of networking is scary, and can feel unnatural. Come to this session to learn how to find and use your Tufts University network, write your elevator speech, and practice networking for formal and informal events. Networking is not just for extroverts; practice makes perfect!

Panel on Funded Research Opportunities, Internships & Fellowships

Meet a panel of current students and alumni who have had pursued selective internships and fellowships and utilized grants to fund unpaid opportunities.

Your Major Doesn’t Define You: Career Paths for non-STEM Liberal Arts Majors

Are you interested in majoring in program of study that is non-technical or STEM related? Hear from successful alumni who have found internships and professional careers in a variety of fields post Tufts. Listen to their stories and learn strategies and advice on ways to leverage your liberal arts degree and make an impact.

Using Improv for Interviewing Prep

Come work with Ryan Smith, Assistant Director, Career Advisor for the Arts and use improv exercises to help breakdown obstacles preventing you from feeling confident when interviewing for internships. Learn how to answer questions dynamically instead of giving canned responses. Stop being nervous and ace your next interview!

How to Market Yourself to Employers as a Sophomore

What do employers think of sophomore candidates as they evaluate internship applications? What types of experiences should you include on your resume and what should you leave off from high school? How do class projects, extra-curricular activities and volunteer activities help tell your story and define what skills you can contribute to an internship? Join our employer panel and hear their perspectives that will help you market yourself and your skills in the best way.


Frequently Asked Questions @ the Tufts Sophomore Career Summit

Where do I check-in?

The conference will be a 1-day conference in different classroom locations in Granoff & Alumnae Lounge on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 from 10am -4pm. Please check-in at Granoff Music Center, 20 Talbot Ave, Medford, MA 02155

Check-in will begin at approximately 10:00am

Students will check-in at our registration table in the Granoff lobby, where you will get a copy of the day’s agenda and an official conference nametag, which will list your previously chosen breakout-sessions.  Continental Breakfast will be provided.

What is the attendance policy?

Once conference attendees are checked-in, you are expected to stay for the remainder of the event.

Can I change my breakout sessions after I complete my registration ?

Please keep a copy of your confirmation email.  The EventBrite system should allow you to change your registration as long as a breakout session has room to add new participants. Registration choices for breakout sessions are on a first-come first-available basis. We have tried to include sessions that will address some of the most common career concerns from students, so we ask you to choose another session should your first choice not be available.

How do I dress?

Business-casual attire is appropriate but wear clothes and footwear in which you feel comfortable. Conference sessions will be in different rooms so attendees should expect to be moving around throughout the day The 2020 Sophomore Career Summit will be a place where you can network with not only each other but with upperclassmen, industry professionals (including alumni), faculty and/or student services staff.

What materials should I bring?

Please bring your Tufts Student ID to facilitate the check-in process. If you are pre-registered to attend a breakout sessions on Handshake, a laptop or mobile device on which you can access your on-line Handshake account is recommended.

Are meals included ?

YES.   Continental Breakfast, Lunch, and Appetizers during the Closing Reception are included. We will have non-dairy, vegan, vegetarian options available to accommodate those with dietary restrictions.

Do I need to bring a resume?

NO. A resume is not needed to attend the sophomore career summit. If you would like to bring paper and a pen/pencil to take notes, please feel free to do so. Some sessions may have handouts, so you can always bring a folder to carry any handouts that you may receive from the sessions.

What are the Summit giveaways and raffles?

Throughout the conference, all attendees may have a chance to win raffle prizes and will receive a thank you gift at the end of the Summit. Students must be present in order to win/receive a prize/gift.
