Learn about the African Burial Ground Memorial during this year's Black History Month

About this Event

In celebration of Black History Month, guest speaker T. Rasul Murray, a historical interpreter and griot at the African Burial Ground National Monument, will present an overview of this sacred site in Lower Manhattan which honors African Americans and informs on the hardships they endured in early America. Discovered in 1991, the burial ground is considered to be one of the most significant archaeological finds in the U.S. over the last 100 years.

About the speaker

T. Rasul Murray, public historian and lecturer, is also known as a poet, essayist, short story writer. He is a veteran of the civil rights, Black Power, Black Arts and Black Studies movements. He lectures on a range of Africana subjects.

He is a native New Yorker who has lived in Brooklyn for more than half a century. Rasul is also a licensed New York City Tour Guide who conducts private tours of his city, including tours of “The African Burial Ground and Cultures of the African Diaspora”,“Old Manhattan and Its African Past”, “Harlem, Capitol of the Black Cultural World” and an introduction to New York for the first-time visitor. Rasul often lectures on the burial ground His work has appeared in Black World, The Journal of Black Poetry, Expressions, Esprit, Black Creations, McCalls Magazine, and other national and international magazines and journals and has been anthologized in “A Penny A Copy”. He has performed his poems in a variety of spoken word venues in the United States and abroad.

For eight years, he moderated an Africana interest e-list, Cross Posts Information Exchange and was a subscriber to severa Black “Bulletin Board Services”, the earliest Black presence on what soon became the internet.

He is currently working on a book about the burial ground and the African Diaspora.

Rasul is the father of two sons who, he says, are by far, his best poems. His two grand sons are his constant joy and his granddaughter, an unmitigated delight!
