VOLUNTEER NATURALIST POSITION

Purpose

Volunteer Naturalists help TRK staff provide environmental education programs for students during weekdays in the fall and spring at Dirksen Nature Park and in the spring at the Tualatin River Farm. There are also additional opportunities for VolNats to help with during summer programming and with programs for children and adults at events year-round throughout the greater Portland Metro area.

Position Description

Volunteer Naturalists will facilitate school presentations and field trips using curriculum developed by the Environmental Education Coordinator. TRK works with children in grades K-8 who attend school in the Tualatin River watershed with an emphasis on serving students from low-income Title I schools. Most field trips take place at Dirksen Nature Park in Tigard (11130 Tigard St, Tigard OR). In May field trips are also held at the Tualatin River Farm in collaboration with Clean Water Services, Friends of Trees, and Stamberger Outreach, Consulting.

Essential Job Duties

  • Implement Nature Awareness school field trip programs, in classrooms and outdoors while ensuring educational messages are delivered and participants have a positive and safe experience.

  • Help lead school field trips, time commitment for each school field trip is approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours.

  • Take initiative to sign up for upcoming field trips posted in the online VolunteerSpot calendar

Time Commitment

After attending a TRK training session, VolNats are expected to provide a minimum of 30 hours of service within a school year (about 10 school field trips). Field trips average 2 ½ – 3 hours. It is recommended that all volunteer naturalists average two to four field trip programs per month during the fall and spring months.
