Event description

Description

Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish New Year of Trees, is often celebrated by planting trees, eating fruits, and honoring our connection to and dependence on the world around us. Here at Coastal Roots Farm, we acknowlege Tu B’Shvat with an annual festival in our food forest!

Our Food Forest Festival this year focuses on Orlah, the practice of allowing fruit-bearing trees and vines to grow for three years without harvesting. During the trees’ fourth year, we treat the fruits as holy. Finally, in the fifth year, we harvest the fruit for consumption and sale.

Here at the Farm, we believe this practice has a lot to teach us about patience! This Tu B’Shvat, we’re inviting the whole community to patiently celebrate the growth of our fruit trees together.

At the Festival, you’ll enjoy opportunities to plant trees, propagate fruit trees, tour the food forest, learn about fruit tree care, work your way towards becoming a Junior Food Forester, play in nature, tell stories, and so much more!

This year we’re thrilled to host several groups of roaming musicians throughout the forest. In the morning Coral Bells will play their folky, bluegrass rock ‘n roll among the trees!

In the afternoon, we’ll be planting to the fusion of klezmer and world beat music byof Yale Strome & Hot Pstromi.

The festival includes tree planting, hands-on activities for all ages, food forest tours, and the opportunity to purchase farm-fresh produce as well as food from local vendors.

Activities include:

  • Planting fruit trees along the Peah Trail
  • Propagating pomegranate trees
  • Food Forest Tours
  • Water harvesting tour with Ecology Artisans
  • Storytime with PJ Library
  • Story Recording with Farmer Aaron
  • Nature Play
  • "Draw a Forest Landscape" with Encinitas Friends of the Arts
  • Birthday Party Play with Soille Hebrew Day School

During the event we’ll also gather as a community to ceremonially plant a carob tree led by Rabbi George Wielechowski.

We’re thrilled to have some of our favorite food vendors serving up delicious, ethically sourced food:

  • Green Door Café
  • Da Fazenda
  • Oh! Juice
  • Cucina Caprese
  • Kombucha Culture
  • Cappuccino in the Park
  • Kosher Lunches from Lang's Bakery

Tu B’Shvat is our biggest event in the food forest and produced through a labor of love with our community. We are committed to ensuring that everyone in our community has access to fresh, locally grown, organic produce as well as education and community building. Becaue of this, our ticket prices are suggested donations and tickets are available on a pay-what-you-can basis.

Questions about pay-what-you-can? Visit our Farm Stand on Thursdays from 2-6 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. or email our Education & Events Manager at nora@coastalrootsfarm.org.
