Event description
Join us at the launch of Tsunagu/Connect, an oral history project exploring the lives of Japanese women in the UK since 1945.

About this Event

Tsunagu/Connect is a new oral history project seeking to record the lives of Japanese women in the UK since 1945. The lives of Japanese women in the UK are little-known and otherwise misunderstood. We will collect and share Japanese women’s stories in their own words through intergenerational interviews, culminating in an exhibition, and a live performance piece in 2021.

We are looking for English/Japanese volunteer interviewers to conduct oral history interviews. We warmly invite anyone interested to join us at our launch event to find out more about the project and see how you can get involved!

Tsunagu/Connect is a project led by Yellow Earth Theatre in partnership with the Japan Society and the Museum of London, and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It is part of the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020.

Programme for launch event:

  • Introduction to Tsunagu/Connect by Kumiko Mendl of Yellow Earth Theatre
  • An illustrated talk by writer Keiko Itoh, author of The Japanese Community in Pre-War Britain: From Integration to Disintegration
  • Opportunity to explore Japanese museum collections and influence plans for the new Museum of London (opening in 2024)
  • Light refreshments
