Event description

Description

We are delighted to be hosting this workshop, which will examine the new legal landscape of the Care Act 2014 and how best to maximise support for carers.

This workshop is essential for anyone who would like to have or needs a better understanding of the duties on local authorities when carrying out a Carers Assessment under the Care Act 2014.

Our guest speaker is Michael Mandelstam, who is widely recognised for his legal work in health and social care, and an expert trainer in this area. Previously he worked at the Department of Health and before that, at the Disabled Living Foundation. He has written many legal books including, most recently, Care Act 2014: an A-Z of Law and Practice (May 2017).

So whether you are supporting a Carer through the assessment process, the person responsible for carrying them out or the Family Carer - this workshop will give you an in-depth overview of how best to carry out Care Act compliant assessments that are fit for purpose. It will also be an opportunity to share knowledge and improve the confidence & skills in this very challenging area.

The course aims to cover the following;

- Summarise the Care Act 2014

- The key function of carers’ assessment and eligibility criteria

- Who needs to be assessed & how to carry out assessments

- The right to an assessment irrespective of level of need or the carers’ financial resources

- What should the support plan include

- The interplay between carer’s eligibility and the eligibility of an adult in need.

- The role of preventative and universal services

This course is suitable for professionals supporting carers in the voluntary or statutory sector, who may be carrying out carers assessments; supporting carers through the assessment process or advocating on their behalf; and/or Family Carers.
