Event description

Description

Jair Bolsonaro assumed the Brazilian presidency earlier this year on January 1st, becoming the first far-right leader in over 13 years.

55% of the electorate chose him, understanding that his strong discourse with radical conservative ideas and clear inclination towards the right would help improve the country. Bolsonaro’s presidency has joined other nationalist movements within the region and around the world. President Trump congratulated Bolsonaro in a special Tweet by writing: “the U.S.A. is with you!”

In the last 13 years, Brazil was governed by parties of the left and more recently by alliances of different parties (center and left), achieving many advances at the social level; but the last government, unleashed political instability reflected in the economy and security; leading the public to vote for a firm leader in Bolsonaro, a former captain in the Brazilian military.

The assumption of this new far-right presidency brings with it a lot of uncertainty about how it will treat the rights of minority groups and the advances in social inclusion that were achieved in recent years.
