Mike's DJ Mixes incl. Robot Heart at Burning Man, Ecstatic Dance Bogota, Cielo New York, Fabrica de Arte Cubano Havana: "Trip to Cuba” - Ninja Tune Records & Dubspot New York contest winner:

Joining Mike on the music making journey is Clave Ole ...returning after a brilliant night of our dancing to their drumming on our New Years Celebration Ecstatic Dance.

is an extremely talented collective of drummers brought together fortuitously by a love of and reverence for Afro-Cuban rhythms and an urge to spontaneously create through the drum. They love to play the music from late-1800's Cuba onwards: guaguancó, yambú, columbia, bembe, tumbao, mozambique, and cha cha cha and more …

They magnetically inspire dance through their combined musical production of a wide diversity of harmonious rhythms in co-creation with the dancers! We are thrilled to have this Afro-Cuban Collective stepping in at various portions of our dance celebration!

Also returning to nourish our bodies and our palates is Karim from Healthy Planet (on the Danforth).

Karim will be preparing DELICIOUS SMOOTHIES for us to enjoy throughout the night.

Ecstatic Dance Toronto

Ecstatic Dance Toronto is a living breathing and growing inspiration that was sparked into existence by Julia Ray in 2006. As a freestyle dancer, dream worker, as well as DJ, Julia’s lifework is to inspire us back into our bodies as a way of exploring and expanding our human potential. Each soul inspiring journey is an opportunity to dance and be danced.

“Ecstatic Dance is the way we use to gather as a community and dance to rhythms and music for the purpose of celebration, healing, transformation, prayer … everything and anything under the sun.

The vision of Ecstatic Dance Toronto is to build a consistent, strong structure (container) that can hold all our stories. Perhaps it’s a doorway we step through to enter a space that is much broader in perspective than our usual day-to-day consciousness. When we dance for ourselves, we dance for things that really matter, our hopes, our dreams and our visions. At the same time we feel in our bodies a familiarity of generations, and the thread that connects us to cultures and tribes who have engaged in this ritual since the beginning of time. Yet we are fully aware that we are molding for future generations who depend upon us now as we shape our present lives together "

- Julia Ray

Why Do We Dance?

A Dance Practice Enlivens Us

In a movement practice we have the opportunity to discover and reconnect to what is here what is real. Our body holds this truth and can connect to and express it genuinely in its free dance, unpacking our true gifts and potential as we do.

When we move in accordance with what is truly within us, we create the opportunity of liberation from limiting beliefs and stories that may be getting in the way of our truth.

What is real changes and just appears as it naturally is throughout the dance and from one dance to the next, with infinite possibilities to create and re-create ourselves. The choices we make lead us into realities that beautifully unfold our story differently each time.

In one instance, our body may take us through our dance on a journey deep into what may be painful or a revelation to our consciousness and opportunity for expression, exfoliation, healing and transformation.

In yet another moment we may be led into the body’s expression of the simple joy that is within us and wants to be celebrated. All that arises within us in our dance is good and exactly appropriate for this very moment. In giving ourselves room to dance our truth without judgement, we give our body the ability to produce its own medicine.

How Do We Dance?

You are free to move however you wish in honour of what your body wants.

Letting go of aesthetics and expectations and journeying within allows our body to just be in whatever is happening. This is a safe, sacred and judgement free space.

We dance with bare feet

One of the most sensitive of and determining parts for the rest our anatomy; feet go mostly unnoticed and ignored, confined within the limited space and comfort of shoes. Feeling ourselves fully begins with our relationship to the ground. We ask that you put nothing between your feet and the ground.

No experience needed

Dancers of all ages, genders, cultures, sizes, etc are welcome (children are welcome when accompanied by an adult)

We request no talking on the dance floor

Cell phones and cameras are not permitted in the dance space during the dance. Photos may be taken at the end of the evening.

We are an Alcohol-free and recreational drug-free dance space.

The dance experience is about going into what is there and allowing it to be, regardless of what it is. Tapping into the authentic truth of ourselves allows us to bring it out in its fullness. We ask that dancers bring an unaltered state of consciousness so that there are no layers concealing the truth, within which is the golden discovery of healing, development, joy and expansion.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement.

Bring plenty of water to drink
