In this class, we will apply the “anchor and release” concept to slow specialty turns and fast spins. Learn how to gather, build and release energy while still maintaining a firm grip on your central axis in specialty turns like the Sahra, Wrap Around, and Barrel Turns. Use the anchor and release to find control, placement, and stability in your calibrated spins and turns.

Sunday, Sept. 15th 1:30 – 3:30 pm
What separates the women from the girls in ATS® dancing is musicality. Even though the dance is improvisational, a thorough understanding of the music is vital. In this workshop, we will develop our understanding of how to select ATS® movements based on musical elements, such as phrasing, instrumentation, cadence, and texture. (Note: to prepare for this class, attendees will receive an email with instructions for studying a few pieces of music from the FCBD® catalog.)

Growing up in Fairview Park, Ohio, Anita Lalwani was a bookworm. She tried tennis, skiing, and even synchronized swimming, but it was not until she moved to San Francisco in the 1990s and met Carolena Nericcio that she fell in love with American Tribal Style (ATS®) bellydance. Since then, she has devoted her life to dance and through the love of dance she found her mission of helping others find happiness, grace, beauty, and elegance through movement.

Anita got her teacher training credential in the late 1990s, directly from Carolena, long before the General Skills and Teacher Training program officially existed. She took extensive one-on-one sessions with Carolena and taught as a teacher-in-training at the San Francisco mothership before becoming an official teacher. Anita is currently the only ‘OG’ teacher still working with the FatChanceBellyDance Troupe, and is one of the highly esteemed FatChanceBellyDance Teachers Collective, a group of 7 teachers working together to teach and present ATS® in San Francisco.

Anita is also a certified yoga teacher since 2005, and teaches yoga daily. She teaches vigorous yang-intensity vinyasa classes as well as yin-intensity restorative classes to San Francisco yoga students of all ages.

Since 2008, Anita also works with clients one-on-one as a personal fitness trainer and is certified in personal training and corrective exercise through the National Association of Sports Medicine. She also has certifications in TRX suspension training, and Functional Training through the Gray Institute of Functional Training. Her mantra: Honor the gift of the body by optimizing posture and movement patterns.

In her workshops and classes, Anita shares with her students her passion and belief in the transformative power of music and dance. "Understand and recognize that the mistakes you make are a crucial component of your learning process." You can find Anita on Facebook (once in a while), on her website, (also rare), or out on the dance floor of life (yes, of course)! Contact Anita at to schedule a workshop or training near you.

Dress in stretchy layers of exercise clothing, or traditional ATS® class attire of a 25 yard skirt and choli. Bring a refillable water bottle, a notebook/pen and perhaps a yoga mat. Don’t forget your zils! Please arrive at least 15 minutes before each class to settle in.

We will have a variety of vendors on site for your shopping pleasure! Vending hours will be: 9 am – 4 pm on Saturday and 9 am – 2 pm on Sunday. If you are interested in vending please email for an application. Space is limited and will be filled on a first come first served basis.

While Silverton does have a small grocery and many restaurants, offerings for those with special dietary needs can be limited. If you have food allergies or aversions we recommend you bring food with you and inquire about ingredients before ordering at local restaurants. Durango and Montrose both have great grocery shopping options, including several natural foods stores.

We have provided a generous 1.5 hour lunch break for those preferring to have lunch in town. You may also bring a sack lunch and, weather permitting, enjoy it on one of the two large decks at Kendall, which are equipped with picnic tables and lounge chairs.

Two airports are roughly equidistant from Silverton: the Durango La Plata County Airport (DRO) and the Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which are 62.3 and 60.25 miles from Silverton respectively. Once you are in Silverton pretty much everything is within walking distance, so no car is necessary.

Unless otherwise noted, all activities will take place at the Kendall Mountain Community Center. Vending will be located in the Fireside Lounge and classes will take place in the Grand Ballroom, which is a beautiful timber framed space with hardwoods floors, ample natural light and fantastic mountain views. KMCC is a short walk from Silverton’s downtown area, or if you prefer to drive, the facility also has a large lot with ample free parking. For more information about KMCC visit

We are working on lining up block of hotel rooms for dancers – stay tuned for more information! Private vacation homes can also be rented through VRBO, Airbnb or Silverton Property Management:

Silverton is a quaint and historic Victorian mining town located 50 miles north of Durango in the heart of Colorado's majestic San Juan Mountains. The town is a National Historic Landmark, and is surrounded by public lands, so opportunities for outdoor recreation including hiking, mountain biking, camping, jeeping, etc. abound. September is a wonderful time of year to view the fall colors. More information on Silverton area activities can be found on the Silverton Chamber of Commerce website:

Please note that Silverton sits an elevation of 9,318 feet above sea level and is accessible only via high mountain passes. While altitude sickness is not a problem for most visitors, you should be aware of its symptoms which include headaches, dizziness and shortness of breath. One of the best ways to avoid altitude sickness is to drink lots of water before you arrive and while you are here. Allowing a day or two to acclimate, eating light meals, reducing your alcohol intake and getting plenty of rest will also help.

The weather in Colorado can be unpredictable. It can be very warm and sunny in September, or we may experience snow. Nighttime temperatures can vary by as much as 30 degrees from daytime highs. Your best bet is to be prepared for anything Mother Nature may dish out! Bring everything from tank tops to warmer layers and flip flops to closed toe shoes.

Please note that workshop registration fees are non-refundable, however they are transferable. If you have registered and are unable to attend, it is your responsibility to sell your spot to another dancer. Please email with your name and the name of the dancer who will be taking your place.

Please check with your doctor before beginning any exercise or health regimen. Caldera Belly Dance, any Tribal Summit instructors, the Town of Silverton, and their associates accept no responsibility for personal injury that may take place during the classes or while arriving at or leaving the facilities.
By making a Tribal Summit purchase you are accepting this agreement to waive, release and discharge Lisa Branner and Caldera Belly Dance/Caldera Tribal, heirs, executors, administrators, legal representatives and assigns from all liability for or by reason of any damage, loss or injury to person and property. You hereby acknowledge and agree that you have carefully read this waiver and release agreement, that you fully understand the same and that you are freely and voluntarily executing same.
