Helen Zia is an award-winning Chinese-American journalist and renowned activist for Asian American and LGBTQ+ rights.

For decades, Zia has been a powerful voice not only for APIA communities, but also for numerous marginalized communities, through her organizing, speaking, and writing. She has been a champion for racial justice, renowned for her activism against hate crimes following the infamous 1982 killing of Vincent Chin and against racially-motivated domestic and sexual violence, her membership in the delegation representing journalists of color at the 1995 United Nations World Congress on Women, and her fight for representation in journalism and media as President of the Asian American Journalists Association. Such a background provides her with an informed, critical lens through which to analyze and comment on contemporary racial tensions and violence. Beyond the purview of race, her experience as former Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine, her efforts to amplify and make visible the voices of women in media as Co-Chair of the Women’s Media Center, and her advocacy for gay and lesbian rights speak to her expertise in addressing topics vital to understanding the #MeToo movement and battles for LGBTQ+ rights.

Today, Zia continues to fervently advocate for the APIA community and all the identities that lie at its intersections, speaking at various institutions about the current state of Asian America, the overall political climate, and their inextricable ties to each other.
