Trends in Sustainability Reporting

with EcoStrategy Group

How do businesses communicate their sustainability to clients and the outside world? EcoStrategy Group, a BC3 member, has published a new report detailing sustainability reporting trends within the Bay Area business community.

The report found that many of the most successful companies make a conscious effort to inform stakeholders about their environmental performance; in fact, almost 60% of the Bay Area companies with revenues of $1 billion or more do so.

Kathleen Gilligan and Karen "KJ" Janowski of EcoStrategy Group will share the findings of their study, “Trends in Sustainability Reporting”, which rates the top public companies in the Bay Area on how well they have communicated about their environmental sustainability initiatives.

The session will be highly interactive - BC3 members are encouraged to share their own stories and successes.

Kathleen Gilligan

Partner & Co-Founder, Eco-Strategy Group

Kathleen is a change agent who believes that climate change is a strategic business issue. After two decades of executive leadership for companies around the world, she has turned her attention to the next frontier: sustainability.  And now, with EcoStrategy Group, Kathleen has melded her passion for the environment and her business expertise to help companies achieve triple bottom line benefits. Today, that theme is expressed by helping businesses craft plans for engaging key stakeholders, and by developing viable sustainability reporting strategies.

Kathleen speaks and blogs on a variety of topics relating to clean technology and sustainability, and is contributing author of the book Becoming a Green Innovator.  She has developed tenant sustainability programs, evaluated carbon reporting questionnaires, and helped to design a carbon tracking tool.  She augmented her business background by becoming a LEED Accredited Professional and by completing  sustainability change agent training with Alan AtKisson, author of The ISIS Agreement.

Since co-founding EcoStrategy Group in 2008, Kathleen and partner Karen “KJ” Janowski have accrued a body of knowledge in sustainable business practices.  This perspective makes them uniquely qualified to help clients navigate the challenging terrain of sustainability initiatives.   Stakeholder engagement, carbon measurement and reporting, and strategic communications about sustainability efforts are the ways that EcoStrategy Group delivers business value.

Karen "KJ" Janowski

Partner & Co-Founder, Eco-Strategy Group

KJ spent more than 25 years in the fast-moving high technology industry honing her skills in what she likes to call “listening to stakeholders.”  Whether those stakeholders are consumers, businesses, employees, investors, or non-profit organizations, KJ effectively employs a wide range of techniques to understand their needs and perspectives.  Building on her extensive business background in market research and analysis, she uses both qualitative and quantitative research techniques and is a skilled interviewer and facilitator.

In her previous life, KJ was responsible for launching over 30 products which generated over $500 million in revenue.  This taught her how to orchestrate cross-functional resources and to connect the dots between activities and business results.

KJ has written articles, white papers and blog posts on a wide range of sustainability and communications topic.  Her work with EcoStrategy Group has included strategic planning, stakeholder research, employee education programs, and development of a “green guide” for business operations.

KJ serves on the leadership team of GreenTown Los Altos, nonprofit organization promoting sustainability, and a business team mentor for the California Clean Tech Open business plan competition.  Her interest in sustainability dates back to the first Earth Day in 1970, when she was inspired to help establish and run a recycling center at her high school.

KJ earned a BS from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from Stanford University. She is a member of the Business Council on Climate Change and Sustainable Silicon Valley.
