Trees are commonly damaged during construction and successful preservation requires special consideration. This workshop explores strategies for managing trees during construction. Learn about:

  • The value of preserving existing trees with development;
  • The importance of the arborist’s role throughout project planning, design, and construction;
  • Identifying trees that are suitable for preservation;
  • The possible ways trees may be affected by construction;
  • Tree protection measures and monitoring;
  • The use of alternative construction techniques to provide for tree protection; and
  • Addressing tree damage, risk potential and remedial treatments.


Includes an indoor presentation and outdoor exercise.

9:00 – 11:00 Introduction – Planning for Tree Preservation

(2 hours)

  • Value of preserving trees during site development.
  • Arborist’s roles throughout various phases of development.
  • Identifying trees that are suitable for preservation (includes large group exercise).


11:30 – 12:00 Construction Impacts and Tree Protection Measures

(0.50 hour)

  • Common ways that trees are damaged by construction impacts.
  • Methods for determining root protection zones.
  • Common tree protection measures.

12:00 – 1:15 Construction Impacts and Tree Protection Measures Continued

(1.25 hours)

  • Scenario based small group exercise to identify root protection zones.
  • Common reasons for root protection zone encroachment.
  • Methods of providing soil protection.
  • Alternative construction techniques to allow encroachment within root protection zones.
  • Methods of conducting exploratory excavation.
  • Revisit small group exercise to discuss root protection zone alternatives.


1:15 – 1:45 Field Component

  • View examples of trees adjacent to construction
  • Discuss appropriate tree protection measures for each example
  • Evaluate protection measures recommended

Instructor - Morgan Holen, Morgan Holen & Associates LLC

This workshop will be led by Morgan Holen. Mrs. Holen is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist (PN-6145B) and Qualified Tree Risk Assessor, and the owner of Morgan Holen & Associates, LLC, a consulting arborist and urban forest management company based in Wilsonville, Oregon. Morgan is a fourth generation forester and has protected thousands of trees on development projects throughout the Portland Metropolitan region over the last eleven years. She is member of the Oregon Community Trees Board of Directors.
