Treating Caries With Silver Diamine Fluoride

Description: In this webinar attendees will learn what silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is and why it is effective as an interim intervention in managing dental caries.
The speakers will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of use, discuss populations that will benefit most from this intervention and offer insight on how to code this service. In addition, the pre- senters will offer tips for application since they all have experience applying this topical agent.
Learning objectives: At completion of this course, attendees will be capable of:
- Identifying patients populations who might benefit from the application of SDF;
- Increasing care options for populations with un- treated carious lesions;
- Explaining the advantages and disadvantages of SDF;
- Discussing how the application of SDF can be used to manage dental decay and potentially decrease the number of emergency dental visits for patients with financial restraints and/or limited access to care.
About our speakers
Pamela Quinn, MSEd, RDH, has been a dental hygiene educator for 32 years, serving as program director for 18 of those years. She received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award in 2015 for Excellence in Faculty Service and NYDHA’s Mentor Award in 2018. She is a member of the ADHA and an active member of NYDHA, as well as the Central Region Hygienists’ Association. She is NYDHA’s Vice President of Professional Development and Chair of the Education Committee. She was part of a medical/dental team that traveled to El Salvador in 2020,providing dental hygiene services to 54 families, which included the application of silver diamine fluoride. She is a consultant for dental offices, assisting them in developing their respiratory protection program and performing OSHA-mandated fit-testing for the dentists and hygienists wearing N95s or KN95s.
Donna Burgess, MSEd, RDH, is NYDHA’s immediate past President and serves on its Executive Committee and Education Committee. She is a member and served as an officer with the Central Region component. With degrees from SUNY Farmingdale, Valley Forge Christian College and SUNY Oswego, she is a clinical dental hygienist in a private practice, including serving prosthetic and periodontal patients. She was a member of the Mouth Care Without a Battle team of hygienists, a two-year research project of the NYS Foundation for Quality Care and NYDHA to advance access to oral health care for residents of long-term care facilities. She was a member of a medical/dental mission to El Salvador, providing oral health screenings and applying silver diamine fluoride, where appropriate.
Maureen Hankin, MPH, RDH, oversees the SUNY Broome Community College Dental Hygiene Program as department chair, serves as Student American Dental Hygiene Association co-advisor and co-teaches the SUNY Broome Health for Haiti global service learning course. The program received the 2016 and 2019 ADHA Student Community Service Award for the work inHaiti and the Dental Hygiene Program received the 2020 Excellence in Teaching Award by the NYS Dental Association. With degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Detroit, she received the NYS SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She is on the Board of Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network of Binghamton and was honored with the Broome/Tioga Status of Women Council Woman of Achievement Award and the Outstanding Volunteer Award for Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network.
