What about Chess Fest? This long-running, much loved, local tournament has retired, giving rise to the Treasure Chess K-12 Scholastic Tournament. You can play unrated chess (a la Chess Fest) or USCF Rated chess. Your choice. Plus, we've moved the venue to the celebrated University of Illinois campus. Between rounds, you can picnic on the Quad, play soccer, frisbee, etc. Parental supervision required. Prizes, surprises, join us, enjoy!

1. Can you describe the rated sections?

There are 5 rated rounds, 4 sections: Over 1200, Under 1200, Under 700, Under 400. All rounds are G/25, with a 5 second time delay. Players can "play up" one section according to USCF rules. Games will affect regular and quick ratings. Blitz tiebreaker rounds as needed. Trophies or other chess awards to top 5 finishers in each section. Current US Chess membership required. Tournament Director reserves the right to split or combine sections if necessary. Format is Swiss. USCF rules apply. Questions? Please contact us: 630-733-9260 treasurechessrewards@gmail.com

2. Should I bring a clock? What if I don't have a clock?

Clocks are required in a USC rated tournament. If you have a clock, please bring it (and learn how to use it!) If you don't have a clock, we will provide one.

3. What about the boards and pieces?

Not to worry. We'll provide all boards and pieces for tournament play.

4. What about chess notation?

Game notation (move, algebraic, descriptive, etc.) is strongly recommended for players aged 8+ for rated chess play.

5. Can you describe the unrated sections?

There are 5 unrated rounds, 5 sections. Fair pairings by grade level (age): K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12. No clocks or game notation required. Just play. Comparable to our much loved but now retired Chess Fest tournaments. USCF rules apply. Trophies or other chess awards to top 5 individiuals in each section.

6. What's the Treasure Chess Tournament time frame?

Registration 11:00am. 5 rounds played between 12-5pm. Award Ceremony to follow. Eat beforehand, bring lunch, and/or enjoy diverse campus cuisine between rounds. Feel free to explore our University of Illinois grounds, kick around a soccer ball outside, etc. Please register in advance and arrive by 11:00 a.m.

7. How much is the entry fee?

Just $10 when you pre-register before 10/18/17. After that, $15. For all entrants. And 100% of net proceeds go to local charities: Family Services and Eastern Illinois Food Bank of Champaign-Urbana, IL.

8. I've never played rated chess before, but would like to. What should I do?

First, you must purchase a US Chess 1-year Membership. Age-appropriate. Here's a link to the website: https://secure2.uschess.org/webstore/member.php They'll immediately issue a paper document with your US Chess# . Next, they'll snail mail you a card. Bring the document or card to the tournament (as proof). Unless you select a specific section, you will be automatically entered into the Under 400 section. It's the fairest approach. Within the Under 400 section, players will then be paired by age.

Second, we advise you to register online now as a "rated player". Just write "new" on the entry form in the spaces for US Chess Membership # and US Chess Rating. Please contact us with your US Chess member info when you receive it: treasurechessrewards@gmail.com 630-733-9260. And welcome!

9. How are the individual and team prizes distributed?

Trophies and other chess awards will go to the top 5 finishers in each section, rated and unrated. Team trophies to the top 3 teams K-8 and 9-12. Participation prizes for all entrants.

10. What's the Treasure Chess for Charity Concept?

Treasure Chess rewards everyone on the board: players, parents, educators, the community. To date we've made modest donations to Crisis Nursery and The Humane Society of Champaign-Urbana, IL. 100% of net proceeds from this Treasure Chess K-12 Scholastic Tournament will be distributed to Family Services and Eastern Illinois Food Bank in Champaign-Urbana, IL.

11. What's the Knight's Tour Mystery Challenge? Are there awards?

Let's keep it a mystery. Come solve it. You bring the armour; we'll prep the ponies. Yes, there are prizes!

12. What about cell phones, tablets, pcs?

Not allowed in the playing area. Just your brains!

13. I'm a Chess Instructor. Several of my students wish to play. Can I register them now, at the same time, on the same form?

Please do, brave soul! Whatever's easiest. Register each student individually (providing applicable information) then collectively pay for them. Questions? Contact us at 630-733-9260 or treasurechessrewards@gmail.com (Same answer applies for anyone registering multiple students)

14. What about parental supervision?

All minor pieces (and pawns) must be accompanied by an adult. If you're a coach responsible for your students or a parent(s) with permission to supervise multiple children at this tournament, please advise us asap. No one wants liability issuies. Just a great tournament! USCF rules apply.

15. Can I register by snail mail?

Yes, please send the registration information and your check or money order to:Treasure Chess, PO Box 8301, Champaign, IL 61826. We'll notify you when receive your entry. All escargot entries must be received by 10/18/17 to qualify for the $10 registration fee. In the interest of creating the best possible tournament, however, we strongly advise you to register online now.

16. Can I register by phone?

While we'd love to hear from you, we're not equipped to accept phone payments at this time.

17. Can I register at the door?

Yes. No chess player left off board. However, it'll cost you $15 instead of $10. Also, you'll need to arrive at the tournament and register between 11:00-11:40 a.m. After 11:40 a.m, 1/2 point byes will be assigned as appropriate. Thus and so, in the interest of orgainizing the best possible tournament, we strongly recommend online advance registration.

18 Can I purchase a USC Membership at the door?

Yes. Per above, no chess player left off board. And better later than never! But it can slow the process. So please purchase your USC Membership as soon as possible if you wish to play rated chess.

19. I don't live in Illinois. Am I eligible to play in the Treasure Chess Tournament?

Yes! Wherever you live, you're eligible, you're most welcome. Unfortunately, we did have to turn down a player from Mars. Something about his vehicle being larger than the U of I campus. Go figure. But we did manage to connect him to some chess dudes on Neptune. Last we heard... they're happy, planning an intergalactic opening.

20. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

You must be in grades K-12 to enter the Treasure Chess Open Tournament, either as a rated or unrated player. Home schooled youngsters are of course eligible. Preschoolers register in the Kindergarten section. We can verify all registration information with the USCF, your school, your parents. ID at the door helps. Please bring your USCF card if you have one. Again, please register online in advance.

21. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Auto? Bus? Train? Airplane? Bike? Hike? Up to you. Here's the University of Illinois Free Parking link: http://www.parking.illinois.edu/parking_items/weekday-amp-overnight-parking

If, for whatever reason, you end up paying for metered parking, we'll have an ample supply of quarters on hand to exchange for your dollar bills.

630-733-9260 or treasurechessrewards@gmail.com or via Event Brite. One player moved a pawn to d5 and yelled: "Hey, Treasure Chess...!" but it went Nxd5 before we could hear him so...please contact us in the usual way. Thanks.

23. What's the refund policy?

Sorry, no refunds. 100% of net proceeds to local charities.

24. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes, we advise it.

Can I update my registration information?

Sure. Just let us know or do it here at Event Brite.

25. Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

No. But please call us if there's an issue.

26. Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes. Who pays, who plays, could happen. Try to contact us in advance if anything's amiss. We'll have your info. However, you can't send your cat to play for you, even if she's a grandmeowster. We'd have to do a "paws playoff". Fur would fly. Kids would sneeze. Parents would do the allergy thing. Best keep them at home. (cats, not parents, parents are required!)

27. Do you need volunteers and/or sponsors? Both. Parents & Coaches most welcome. Please contact us: 630-733-9260 treasurechessrewards@gmail.com

28. I've read through all 27 FAQs. Do I get a special award?

Yes, a little sundry from one of our Treasure Chests. See you there!
