About this event

Traumatic Grief: Definitions, Effects, & Interventions image

The presentation, Traumatic Grief: Definitions, Effects, & Interventions, aims to explore the construct of grief that is severe or prolonged and interferes with an individual’s daily functioning. Drawing from the evidence base within the grief and trauma literature, the presentation will define traumatic grief and identify potential presenting symptoms. In addition, it will highlight plausible effects of traumatic grief from an ecological/bio-psychosocial perspective. Finally, the presentation will outline evidence-based interventions for treatment, simultaneously addressing the grief and trauma response associated with a traumatic death. The presenter will highlight examples of death that might lead to traumatic grief, as well as review a case study to further delineate the construct of traumatic grief. In addition, the presenter will offer a detailed glimpse into the intersection of interpersonal therapy (IPT) and traumatic grief, drawing upon research and her clinical experiences.

Further, the presenter will afford time for questions at the conclusion of the presentation, followed by CE evaluation completion.

Presentation Objectives:

1. Define traumatic grief and list examples

2. Name potential consequences of traumatic grief from an ecological perspective

3. Identify case elements that suggest the possibility of a traumatic grief response

4. Describe at least three evidence-based interventions for the treatment of traumatic grief
