Event description

Description

Register now to attend a one-day opportunity to learn about creating and implementing trauma sensitive practices.

Join Phoenix Children’s Hospital for the Trauma Sensitive Schools Symposium at the Balsz Conference Center. The cost of registration (lunch included) before June 20 is $40. Registration on or after June 20 will be $50.

Our keynote speakers are a principal, Suzanne Savall, and teacher, Lauren Waterbury, who successfully implemented a trauma informed program into their school.

Suzanne Savall has been a social and emotional advocate and educator for 35 years. She is known for inspiring others with her enthusiasm and possesses a genuine heart to help others unleash their compassion and talents to change children and their families’ lives. For the last ten years, as a PK - 6th grade principal near Spokane, Washington, she has transformed Otis Orchards Elementary into a trauma informed learning environment. She will share with you her knowledge and passion for working with adults to help them provide trauma informed strategies and create supportive environments in which traumatized children can focus, behave appropriately, and learn. She has shared this work at the Department of Education and the National Elementary Principal conference in 2015 and 2016 in Washington D.C, and numerous school districts in Eastern Washington. She earned her BA in Elementary Ed, MA in Reading, and Educational Leadership from Eastern Washington University.

Lauren Waterbury has been a passionate educator in the Spokane area for the past 10 years. Before entering the world of education, Lauren obtained her bachelors from Washington State University in Communication Studies, however, it was her love for kids took her back to school to earn her Masters in Teaching at Whitworth University. From the beginning of her career, Lauren always had a passion for championing every child…no matter what skills they come with or not. She has been the teacher who’s taken to “tough” kids for years helping them make progress in the social setting so they can tap into their academic potential. Lauren had the privilege of learning from the Bill and Melinda Gates grant that focused on the impact of ACEs on academic outcomes. For three years, her school worked with mental health professionals to create an environment that is trauma-sensitive. Lauren went on to become a Positive Discipline Facilitator and works with schools in and around the area, training their staff about the impacts of ACEs as well as how to intervene and support students who struggle due to trauma. She had the pleasure of joining Suzanne Savall in Washington D.C. for the National Elementary Principal Conference last summer and loves supporting people who work with children and families struggling due to trauma and/or poverty.

Teachers, Administrators, School counselors, social workers, other school staff, and organizations working with children are encouraged to attend.
