Geri and Richard Brawerman Nursing Institute and Department of Surgery Presents the Trauma Nursing Class

The Trauma Nursing Class is a one day course with the aim of teaching the systematic approach to the management of trauma patients using material from the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN). These STN lectures will be presented by a multidisciplinary group of healthcare workers, each part of the trauma service at Cedars-Sinai. Lectures will provide specific education of trauma care across the specialties.

Content:

  1. The Trauma Program & Trauma Service at Cedar-Sinai
  2. Mechanism of Injury
  3. Musculoskeletal Injuries
  4. Hemorrhagic Shock
  5. Abdominal Trauma
  6. Traumatic Brain Injury
  7. Geriatric Trauma
  8. Thoracic Trauma

Objectives:

  1. Describe the role of a level 1 trauma center within the community.
  2. Name the leading cause of death for all persons 1 – 44 years old.
  3. State how the fundamental principles of physics apply to various types of injuries.
  4. Given a specific mechanism of injury, predict two injury patterns.
  5. Identify the initial assessment for patients with musculoskeletal injury.
  6. Describe upper extremity, lower extremity and pelvic musculoskeletal trauma injuries and implications for nursing care.
  7. Recognize hemorrhagic shock signs and symptoms.
  8. Explain the importance of early control of hemorrhage in trauma patients.
  9. Describe the management and ongoing evaluation of hemorrhagic shock.
  10. Describe common mechanisms of injury seen in abdominal trauma.
  11. Discuss three traumatic injuries of the abdomen.
  12. Identify the functional anatomy of the brain and the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  13. Describe the initial management and neurological assessment of the TBI patient.
  14. Explain management strategies to reduce the risk of secondary brain injury.
  15. List the three most common mechanisms of injury in the elderly.
  16. Discuss four physiological changes that make the elderly trauma patient vulnerable to complications.
  17. Describe issues with pain control in the elderly.
  18. Describe resuscitative interventions for patients with thoracic trauma.
  19. Explain clinical manifestations associated with life-threatening thoracic injuries.
  20. List three life-threatening thoracic injuries that should be identified during the primary survey.

Target Audience: Registered Nurses caring for trauma patients. Registeration fee includes CE’s, Continential Breakfast, Snacks, and Parking

The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, CEP 664, for 6 CE contact hours. No partial CE credit for incomplete attendance, arriving 15 minutes late or leaving 30 minutes early. SPACE IS LIMITED. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY.
